Microbial mats are often centimeter-thick multilayered structures of microorganisms, mainly bacteria, archaea, fungi, and sometimes these mats are enriched with protozoans. Microbial biofilms are in contrast much thinner (10–100 µm) than microbial mats and have a different architecture (Characklis and Wilderer, 1989).
Microbial mats can be grown on ensilaged (process of preserving green food for livestock in an undried condition in airtight conditions) grass in an aqueous solution as free-floating microbial communities. Microbial mats – layered biofilms containing different types of cells – are most complex systems in which representatives of various groups of organisms are found together. Among them are cyanobacteria and eukaryotic phototrophs, aerobic heterotrophic and chemoautotrophic bacteria, protozoa, anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria, and other types of microorganisms. This book provides information about microbial mats, from early fossils to modern mats located in marine and terrestrial environments. Microbial mats can be considered a specialized type of biofilm. They are an extreme example of an interfacial aquatic habitat in which many microbial groups are laterally tightly compressed into a thin mat of biological activity. Microbial Mat: A Microbial Mat is a place where several different types of microorganisms (microbes, or tiny single-celled animals) live together in a community. The mat is a tiny, multi-layered community where each microbe produces something A laminated microbial community located within precipitated gypsum at Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The colored bands, and precipitated gypsum above them, are about 3 centimeters thick. Photosynthetic microbial mats are a type of microbial mat that obtains its energy from sunlight. On the early Earth, before higher multicellular organisms evolved, photosynthetic microbial mats literally covered the planet, and microbes were the only life forms.

Microbial mats are multi-layered sheets of microorganisms -- mostly bacteria and archaea (another domain of bacteria-sized microbes) that dominated much of the planet for billions of years, before the evolution of multicellular organisms, which promptly ate those microbes up …

Mats can be recognized as wrinkly surface textures on bedding planes (coming in a variety of forms commonly referred to as Microbially Induced Sedimentary Structures, or MISS), or more rarely as preserved assemblages of tiny pyritized filaments coating the surfaces of macrofossils (e.g. in the White Sea; Grazhdankin & Gerdes, 2007).

Mats have earned the name “complex biofilms” because their development on physical substrates also occurs as a sequence of processes. Microbial mat Last updated October 11, 2020 The cyanobacterial algal mat, salty lake on the White Sea seaside. A microbial mat is a multi-layered sheet of microorganisms, mainly bacteria and archaea, and also just bacterial.Microbial mats grow at interfaces between different types of material, mostly on submerged or moist surfaces, but a few survive in deserts. [1] Microbial mats can be applied for remediation purposes using several different techniques, and the costs of the natural materials used in the microbial mat-based system can be very cost-effective.
